What I Look For In Your Book

  • Where the pressure drops

    Scenes have pressure or they don't.

    Pressure is the specific, unavoidable, right-now thing at stake that forces a character to act. Not react. Not circle. Not explain.

    Act.

    The question I bring to every scene: what is forcing this character to move right now? If the answer is nothing—that's where the work starts.

  • Where the character stops deciding

    Reactions happen to a character. Decisions reveal who they are.

    When a scene feels like a dead body floating in a lake, I'm looking for the decision the character is avoiding. The thing the writer felt the cost of and pulled back from.

    The reader is ready. The reader has been ready since the scene started.

  • Whether I know what's at risk right now

    Stakes. Not in general. Not eventually.

    Right now—in this scene—what specifically will be lost if this goes sideways?

    Diffuse stakes give the reader something to process at a comfortable distance. Specific, immediate, character-anchored stakes give the reader something to feel.

    If everything matters, nothing feels urgent. If nothing feels urgent, nothing matters.

  • Whether the character is on the page

    The character who lives rent-free in your head? Fully realized, psychologically complex, bleeding wounds and all? And the character who made it onto the page?

    Sometimes they're not the same. 

    Behavior is where character lives. Not description. Not explanation. What they do when it costs them something.

    The reader needs to feel the protagonist before they need to understand them.

  • Whether the writing is committing

    The one phrase in all of prose-dom I would set fire to: it was as if.

    That single hedge moves the reader from inside the experience to the borderlands—watching from a careful distance instead of inhabiting the blood, meat and bones.

    "It was as if the fear was strangling him" → The fear was strangling him.

    Feel the shift? Language that commits has a different weight. The difference is felt before it's understood.

  • Whether the story is moving or hovering

    Momentum is not pace. A fast story can hover. A slow story can move with tremendous momentum if every scene is pulling in the same direction.

    What breaks momentum isn't slowness. It's repetition. The same beat twice. The character circling a decision they've already made without the story registering it.

    Forward isn't faster. Forward is pressure building in a direction.
